Measuring your RV awning is essential for ensuring a perfect fit, whether you're replacing an old one or installing a new awning. A properly measured awning provides optimal shade, protection, and comfort while enhancing the usability of your RV's outdoor space. Follow this guide to learn how to measure your RV awning accurately and avoid costly mistakes.

Tools Needed for Measuring

To accurately measure your RV awning, you'll need a few basic tools. Ensure you have a tape measure that extends long enough to cover the width of your awning. A ladder may be necessary for reaching higher points safely, and having a notebook and pen on hand is useful for recording measurements.

For added convenience, a helper can assist in holding the tape measure steady and confirming the measurements. Make sure to perform the measurement on stable ground to avoid any accidents.

How to Measure a RV Awning?

Awning size is measured from the center of the right arm to the center of the left arm.

If you need new fabric replacement, please do not take the measurements of the old fabric or roller tube.

Method A:
Measure your awning from center of roll bar to center of roll bar, in case of 16', choose length of new fabric 15'3''
Method B:

How to Measure a Patio Awning?

Measuring your patio awning correctly is crucial to ensure it fits perfectly and functions properly. Follow these simple steps to measure your RV's patio awning:

Step 1: Gather Your Tools

You'll need a tape measure, a ladder (if necessary), and a notebook and pen to record your measurements. Having a helper can also be beneficial to hold the tape measure steady.

Step 2: Locate the Awning Arms

Identify the two vertical arms that support the awning on either side of your RV. These are usually attached to the RV's exterior and extend outwards when the awning is deployed.

Step 3: Measure from Center to Center

Using your tape measure, measure the distance from the center of one awning arm to the center of the other arm. Make sure to measure in a straight line across the awning. This measurement is the width of your awning and is typically given in feet (e.g., 18 feet). It's important to note that the awning size is based on the width from arm to arm, not the length of the fabric itself.

Step 4: Double-Check Your Measurement

To ensure accuracy, measure the distance again. It's always a good idea to double-check your measurements to avoid any errors when ordering a new awning or replacement parts.

How to Measure a Slide-Out Awning?

Measuring a slide-out awning requires a different approach than measuring a patio awning because it's designed to cover the slide-out section of your RV. Follow these steps to ensure you get the correct measurements for your slide-out awning:

Step 1 Gather Your Tools

As with any awning measurement, you will need a tape measure, a ladder (if necessary), and a notebook and pen to record your measurements. Having a helper to hold the tape measure steady can also be useful.

Step 2 Locate the Slide-Out Flanges

Identify the flanges on either side of the slide-out. The flange is the outer edge or lip that runs around the perimeter of the slide-out box, typically extending out slightly beyond the side of the RV when the slide-out is extended.

Step 3 Measure from Flange to Flange

Extend the tape measure from the outer edge of one flange to the outer edge of the opposite flange. This distance will give you the width of the slide-out awning. Ensure the tape measure is taut and straight to get an accurate measurement. Slide-out awning measurements are typically taken in inches.

Step 4 Measure the Extension Depth

Next, measure how far the slide-out extends from the side of the RV when fully deployed. Measure from the RV wall to the outer edge of the slide-out. This measurement helps determine how much fabric is needed to fully cover the slide-out when it is extended.

Step 5 Double-Check Your Measurements

To ensure accuracy, measure both the width (flange to flange) and the depth (extension) a second time. Double-checking your measurements helps prevent ordering the wrong size awning.

Tips for Accurate Measurements and Common Mistakes to Avoid

To ensure you measure your RV awning accurately, follow these tips and avoid common mistakes:

Use a Reliable Tape Measure: Ensure your tape measure is in good condition and long enough. A faulty tape measure can lead to incorrect measurements.

Measure Twice for Accuracy: Always measure twice to confirm your initial measurement. Consistency is key to avoiding errors.

Have a Helper for Better Precision: A helper can hold the tape measure steady, ensuring a straight line and reducing measurement errors. One common mistake is trying to measure alone, which can lead to inaccurate results.

Follow Proper Measuring Points: For patio awnings, measure from the center of one arm to the center of the other. For slide-out awnings, measure flange to flange. A common mistake is measuring only the fabric width, which doesn’t account for the full awning size.

Record Your Measurements Immediately: Forgetting to record measurements can lead to mistakes. Write down your measurements right away to avoid confusion.

Bonus Tip: After measuring your RV awning, it is time to buy a sun shade for better experience. Filluck's RV awning screen with zipper blocks out 87% of UV and lower the temperature greatly! Buy and Install it easily!
